Musical Instruments of Assam
Assam is famous for its beauty and
culture. In Assam there are many tribes lives and they have their own culture
still they all called Assamese. Assam is very rich in culture. Assam has their
own cultural instruments too. Let’s see some Assamese musical instruments-
· 1. Gogona: this
instrument made by bamboo. It’s using by woman dancer and male dancer in Bihu.
But male one is different with female. Male use Ramdhan gogona and female use
Lahori gogona. In Lahori gogona people use the muga silk to make the sound. It’s
held in the mouth to play.

2. Dhol: This instrument also use in Bihu dance. Those who plays this instrument is known as dhuliya ( man who played dhol). It’s made by wood and cow ladder. Assamese Bihu is incomplete without dhol. Dhol is usually play by boys but nowadays woman also play dhol very well.

· 3. Pepa: Pepa is a hornpipe instrument which is also used in Bihu . This a most important and delightful instrument of Assam. This Pepa made by buffalo’s horn. First buffalo’s horn buried under the soil with salt and after 2-3 months it’s used with a small bamboo. Pepa give an amazing sound and it’s hold in the mouth. Those who play this instrument known as pepua (who played Pepa).

4. Sutuli: This instrument also mainly use in Bihu dance. This instrument is use in Bihu from many decades. This instrument looks like a moon. Usually this is made by soil but in some places it’s made with bamboo also . This instrument use to make sounds like birds and animals. In Assamese folk culture it’s believe that sutuli invite rain. In old time this instrument plays by girls only but nowadays both boy and girl play sutuli .
